During the first season of Million Dollar Decorators on BRAVO I fell in love with Mary McDonald.  Truly a fairy god mother of design, for me she had it all.  With looks, talent and attitude she could wield her design wand with perfect aplomb.  Million Dollar Decorator

The inside story this season (season II) however is Martyn Lawrence Bullard (MLB) as he designs with affect beffiting of his 6 syllable name.  In a most recent episode each of the four designers in the series were invited by Luxe magazine to design a room at the historic Greystone Manor, their 2012 Showhouse.  Of the four, three of them agree to the challenge.  Martyn gets the best of rooms; the Master Suite.

Million Dollar Decorator 2Appointed in fabrics and wallcoverings from his line  exclusively for F.Schumacher the room is nothing short of amazing.  Containing items from around the world the room is a collection of treasures that at once are at home with the history or Greystone Mansion and yet modern in their juxtaposition to one another.  Take for instance the occasional chair and foot stool paired with the mother of pearl inlay accent table.

The crisp lines of the upholstery on the foot stool with its Romanesque contours contrasts in its modernity to its surroundings but is completely at home with the the lines of both the chair and the accent table.Million Dollar Decorator 004

Million Dollar Decorator 003The Ikat fabric (shown  below) used to cover the body of the chair is very much in keeping with the ethnic feel of the room however quickly updating the chair is its solid seat cushion with contrasting welt.

As you watch him don’t let MLB’s percieved arrogance get in the way.  He is so only because he has earned to be so.  Greystone Manor, a residence all about the prestige was built by the infamous Doheny’s. “I was lucky enough to wrangle myself the best room in the mansion, Mr. Doheney’s bedroom suite, a beautifully proportioned set of rooms that exude the elegance of the era. Now the top designers in America are clambering for the different rooms and spaces in the mansion.” – MLB

The Spread

. . .As Mary [McDonald] says “your only as good as your last publication,” so this spread is vitally important to establish status within the industry and power status in the issue! As a viewer I knew not just from MLB’s attitude toward the project but also from the editorial of the show that he would win the spoils of the victor.

Martyn is witty, charming, affected, dry, sarcastic and above all very talented ~ sort of reminds me of me.
