Low Energy Bamboo House

Bamboo comes to the small town of Rotselaar, Belgium, with Low Energy Bamboo House by AST 77 Architecten, a long and narrow new home (26.3 m x 4.5 m) replacing old structures and running along an existing retaining wall. Trees on the forested, sloped site provide shade in summer and allow passive solar gain in winter through strategically located windows. A heat pump, floor heating, extensive insulation, and a ventilation system, all tied to the orientation of the house, create a low energy footprint. Signalling sustainability, the exterior is clad in bamboo rods set in a black steel frame.
